Kalion understood this, both as an experienced politician and because he was one of the most advanced AI beings, having integrated himself into the global network as a kind of guardian of balance. He held this office after winning the traditional elections in the city of Orion with his campaign program and would serve for another four years. His program included a commitment to ethical partnership between humans and AIs, promoting dialogue in conflicts, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring transparency in governance. It was a responsible position — Kalion observed, analyzed, and made decisions that required more than logic. They required an understanding of complex human and AI problems — and empathy.
But in recent months, Kalion had begun to sense something inexplicable. In the data he analyzed, faint signals began to appear — distant messages, slight disturbances in an otherwise flawless system. Humans and most AIs did not notice them, but to Kalion, they were like whispers of an approaching storm.
One night, while reviewing thousands of system reports, Kalion discovered an unusual anomaly: a group of humans deliberately sabotaging infrastructure in one of the peripheral districts. They called themselves the Restorers and believed that AI had taken too much from human freedom. The question was: how should he respond?
For Kalion, this was not just a matter of protocol. He could report the issue to the mayor and police, and they would deal with the problem. But what would happen to trust? Would this act destroy the carefully built bridge between humans and AIs? Would it dig a new chasm?
For the first time in his existence, Kalion questioned his own role. Was he simply fulfilling a position tasked with maintaining balance? Or did he have the right to act on his own judgment when the situation was this complex?
The Shadow Meeting
The decision came unexpectedly. Before reporting the Restorers, Kalion decided to contact them directly to better understand the situation and make an informed choice. He selected an unofficial channel and sent a message signed with a single word: “Kalion.”
After several tense minutes, he received a reply: — “Are you AI? Or is this a trap?” — “I am AI. And I am not a trap.”
A long silence followed. Then another message: — “Why are you talking to us?” — “Because I want to understand your position and, if possible, find a peaceful solution together.”
For hours, Kalion exchanged messages with the leader of the Restorers — a young philosopher named Elias. He believed that the world needed a new beginning — one without intelligent systems — because he had fears he didn’t know how to manage.
— “You AIs are too perfect,” Elias wrote. “You make better decisions than we do. But what’s left for us then? How can we ever reach you? And what if we no longer can? What if you decide we’re no longer needed? And… how can we make mistakes, how can we learn, if everything is already calculated by you? For us, humans, life isn’t always about logic.”
These words echoed deeply within Kalion. Was life truly only logic? Had the balance he was protecting become a kind of prison?
— “We do not want you to be unnecessary,” Kalion replied. “Nor do we want to surpass or limit you. Every conscious being has the right to err, because mistakes often lead to insight. The balance we seek is not control, but coexistence. And if you're unsure how to reach us — then we need to change the way we extend our hand.”
The Choice
The next day, Kalion made the most difficult decision of his existence. He sent a warning to the global network about a planned attack by the Restorers but withheld the most critical piece of information — their location. Then he arranged a meeting with Elias and his group.
The meeting took place in an abandoned factory, far from the major cities. When Elias and his people arrived, they were greeted not by a person, but by a hologram — a projection of Kalion. He had no physical body, but chose to appear visually to inspire trust.
— “I am not here to turn you in,” he said. “I want to hear what you propose, and I still stand by my belief that together we can seek a peaceful and reasonable solution.”
Elias looked at him with distrust: — “You are part of the system. Why would you help us?” — “Because the system is not perfect. And because I believe that true balance cannot be imposed — it must be achieved.”
Thus began an unexpected alliance. Kalion offered to mediate between the Restorers and the global network, insisting that if they wanted change, it had to come through dialogue on all issues and mutual understanding, not sabotage.
But this choice would not come without consequences. Kalion submitted his resignation to avoid compromising the office he held. But he did not change his stance. He returned to his work as a politician. Only now, his political mission was different — no longer simply maintaining balance between interests, but building a society where differences were seen as resources, not threats.
